The Somali STEM Summit 2023, held from November 7-9 in Mogadishu, was a significant event that brought together academics, researchers, policymakers, students, and entrepreneurs to discuss the future of STEM in Somalia. The summit was structured over three days, each focusing on distinct themes:
Day 1: Empowering Youth for a Bright Future
The summit commenced with key discussions on emerging trends in STEM, with a particular focus on youth empowerment. The event highlighted Somalia’s advancements in AI and automation, especially within agriculture and healthcare. Prominent speakers emphasized the importance of building a strong STEM education ecosystem to drive Somalia’s socio-economic growth.
Day 2: Women and Girls in STEM
This day centered on the critical role of women in STEM. The ‘STEM Sisters’ initiative was introduced, aiming to support Somali women and girls in STEM fields through mentorship, training, and career development opportunities. Panelists discussed global and local challenges faced by women in STEM and advocated for increased support and representation.
Day 3: Sustaining Blue Economy, Healthcare, and Agricultural Resources
The final day focused on the intersection of STEM with sustainable development. Discussions covered climate change, blue economy, and the potential of AI in propelling Somalia’s progress. The summit concluded with the awarding of Hodan Nalayeh Scholarships, recognizing outstanding individuals in digital creative media.
Overall, the Somali STEM Summit 2023 was a transformative platform, setting the stage for future collaborations and innovations in Somalia’s STEM landscape.
